One of my church callings I have, is helping out in the nursery every other week. I really don't enjoy it, but I try to put a smile on my face.
Yesterday, I was chatting with one of the other sisters in Nursery, and she was asking me a bit about myself. After learning I was from South Africa, she made a comment about how I didn't have an accent. A few moments later, one little boy came up to me with his dinosaur and ROARED!! in my face. I then took off my glasses, and while cleaning them said "Agh, he just spat in my face." The other Sister then said that she could tell that I had an accent because I said spat, instead of spit. How that is an accent, I don't know. I later asked Daniel about it, and he said that he would have said, "He just spit in my face" too. That doesn't make any sense to me. I mean, you don't say,
"He just drink my juice"
"He just run over my foot"
"She just eat my food"
right?? It just seems weird to me that because I put my sentence in the past tense, that it was an accent.

es, but how do you say "hanger"? Do you pronounce the g or leave it out? Dad says I have an accent because I actually pronounce the g.
haha that's so funny....well I wouldn't say that it makes you have an accent, but it makes you proper! =) I have never thought of that before, the whole past tense thing....they must not teach it to us here, but it makes sense for sure. Hope you don't get spit on anymore though.
That is a really hard past tense verb because it is irregular. Most Americans will just say "spit" like Daniel said. It is funny that she thought that was an 'accent.' Maybe she thought because you changed the vowel in the middle it gave you an accent. Who knows what people really think.
at least your accent is grammatically correct. Buddy will say things like "are you done your homework?" as if it is a perfectly normal way to structure a sentence! He DOES say sorry like sore-y sometimes, though, which I think is cute :) but that's about the only cute part of a canadian accent.
